PRESS RELEASE 143
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation Visits Hungary
17/12/2018

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation held a meeting in Budapest this morning, followed by a press conference, with his Hungarian counterpart, Péter Szíjjártó.

Minister Josep Borrell also held a meeting with Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

At the meeting with his Hungarian counterpart, the Minister expressed his satisfaction with the relaunch of bilateral meetings, considering the last visit of a Spanish Foreign Minister to Budapest took place eleven years ago.

Minister Borrell highlighted good bilateral relations with Hungary, with growing trade, tourism and cultural cooperation. The Minister told his Hungarian counterpart of his satisfaction with the increased interest in teaching the Spanish language in Hungary, and said he hoped this would continue with a view to the next educational reform.

The Minister said that, within the European sphere, Spain and Hungary enjoy a frank and sincere dialogue and, despite differences in some areas, Spain wants to contribute to preventing division between East and West within the fold of the European Union.

Both Ministers reviewed some of the items on the European agenda, with a special focus on the future of the European Union after Brexit and the management of migration flows.

The Ministers also addressed other items on the European agenda, such as the situation in Ukraine.

Within the economic area, Minister Josep Borrell congratulated the Hungarian authorities on the confidence generated in the Hungarian economy among international and financial institutions. He also urged Hungarians to increasingly consider Spain as an ever-growing destination with huge potential for Hungarian investments.
