Meeting Between the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia

​On the margins of the Mediterranean Conference of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), which is hold in Malaga, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation has held a meeting today with his Slovakian counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs Miroslav Lajčák.

Both ministers have addressed the good conditions of the bilateral relations and the need to consolidate them, especially in political, economic, commercial and cultural areas. They have agreed that the priorities of both governments are common, both in internal affairs (unemployment, education and health) and in external affairs. In 2017, Spain was the 9th customer of Slovakia (3% of its exports) and the 9th investor (16.4 million Euros), and the Spanish language is the third most studied language and the second foreign language in the public educational system.

Likewise, both ministers have welcomed the good cooperation during the OSCE Mediterranean Conference in Malaga. Minister Borrell congratulated his Slovakian counterpart for his role in the Presidency of the OSCE Mediterranean Contact Group in 2018 and expressed his total willingness and support for the OSCE Presidency starting on 1 January 2019. In addition, Josep Borrell has been interested in the Slovakian priorities during the OSCE Presidency, especially in the security situation of the Observers in Ukraine, the control of weaponry and the youth.

Finally, Minister Borrell and Minister Lajčák have addressed areas of mutual interest within the framework of the European Union, especially regarding issues related to the European agenda, migration, the social and economic convergence in the EU and the need to reach a good agreement for the Brexit. Likewise, they both have agreed on the need to build bridges with the Visegrad Group in order to prevent the division between the East and the West areas of Europe.
