Spain Sends a Plane with Humanitarian Aid to Indonesia to Alleviate the Crisis Caused by the Earthquakes and Tsunami
05/10/2018

Spain, through the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), a dependent body of the State Secretariat for International Cooperation and for Ibero-America and the Caribbean of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, will send a plane with humanitarian aid material to Indonesia.

An Antonov 12 aircraft will take off tomorrow afternoon from the airbase in Torrejón de Ardoz, loaded with 255 tents which can shelter 1,275 people. The material sent makes up a total of 13.6 tonnes in weight and 48m3. This humanitarian aid measure comes to a total sum of 265,000 euros. This shipment is undertaken after the Government of Indonesia accepted international aid via the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB).

The earthquakes that shook the country in late September and the ensuing tsunamis have caused considerable damage. According to data provided on 4 October 2018 by the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB), there have been 1,581 fatalities, 2,549 serious injuries, 113 people are still missing and 71,000 are permanently displaced. More than 66,000 homes have also been damaged, although these figures could increase as further evaluations are made.

From the outset, the Humanitarian Action Office (OAH) of the AECID has closely monitored this emergency and has been in contact with humanitarian organisations and with the Embassy in Jakarta.

The sending of this plane comes on top of the humanitarian aid provided by Spain from the first moment of this crisis. Spain has already contributed 300,000 euros through the AECID after the emergency appeal was launched. Of this amount, a sum of 200,000 euros was channelled via the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and their emergency fund set up for said effect. A further sum of 100,000 euros was provided to Save the Children International to attend to the population affected by the disaster through the distribution of non-food material and with measures aimed at the protection of childhood.
