Presentation of the Viaja informado, viaja seguro information campaign

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, Mr. Josep Borrell, has presented the "Viaja Informado, Viaja Seguro" (Stay informed, stay safe when travelling) information campaign, which runs every year and is aimed at Spanish nationals travelling abroad, in order to raise awareness on the precautions to take before the trip starts, as well as to inform of the consular services they may resort to in case of need. The secretary general of the UNESPA (Unión Española de Entidades Aseguradoras y Reaseguradoras),  Mirenchu del Valle Schaan, and the representative of FETAVE (Federación Empresarial de Asociaciones Territoriales de Agencias de Viajes Españolas), Manuel Benavides, have participated as well.

Over 15 million people travel abroad every year from Spain, and approximately 1.5 million Spaniards usually live outside Spain and travel during their holidays. “Viaja Informado, Viaja Seguro” is aimed at raising travellers’ awareness on the need to adopt certain simple measures –before leaving- highlighting the following ones:

1º Register with the MAEUEC Traveller Register.
2º Take out travel insurance as broad and complete as possible, in order to cover for any potential incidents, such as health issues, accidents, legal assistance, cancellation, theft or loss of luggage, etc.
3º Carefully read the travel recommendations published by the MAEUEC, which include all countries of the world.
4º Make sure you have all duly updated documentation for travelling, valid for a sufficient period of time until the moment of leaving the country, a visa when required and be especially prudent in case of minors travelling without both parents. It is also important to make sure that all mandatory vaccination requirements are met, so that the entry to the country of destination is authorised. As a general rule and in order to avoid problems, take special care of travel documents.

The information campaign comprises two short videos, posters and leaflets. AENA, Policía Nacional and ADIF have joined their efforts this year to circulate these materials. Furthermore, UNESPA, through its 'Estamos Seguros' (We are safe) initiative, and FETAVE (Federación Empresarial de Asociaciones Territoriales de Agencias de Viajes Españolas) have participated in the preparation of the information campaign.

All the materials may be downloaded from the following link:

As a new aspect this year, the mobile application “Viaja informado, viaja seguro” is already available for Android and Apple. This app sends push messages to travellers, with recommendations and specific warnings of the country of destination in real time, and allows them to offline check the travel recommendations and the emergency contact numbers and addresses of interest at all times.

In addition to this information campaign, the MAEUEC works all year long with different instruments in order to avoid and minimise potential risks. On its website ( consul ar information of interest for Spaniards who live abroad or who are temporarily outside Spain is offered, especially through the Travel Recommendations section. The Ministry is also present in social networks, with two Twitter accounts (one in Spanish, @MAECgob and another one in English, @SpainMFA), on Facebook (@exteriores.maec), Youtube (canalmaectv) and Instagram (@exteriores.maec).

This information work is completed by the "España contigo" service; this service sends an sms to the mobile phone when travelling abroad, stating the number of the emergency phone number of the consular office that is nearest to the town of arrival. This service is provided in collaboration with Telefónica and Orange.

It is important to note that the consular network, comprising 181 consular offices (88 general consulates, 2 consulates and 91 consular sections in embassies), is aimed at providing assistance and protection for all Spaniards in need of such.
