Minister Josep Borrell Meets his Counterparts from Bolivia and Uruguay and Attends the EU-Pacific Alliance Meeting

In the framework of the second EU-CELAC ministerial meeting, being held in Brussels, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, Josep Borrell, met yesterday with his Bolivian counterpart, Chancellor Fernando Huanacuni. Both ministers verified the excellent state of the bilateral relations and expressed their mutual interest in strengthening said relations. Accordingly, they agreed for the State Secretary for International Cooperation and for Ibero-America and the Caribbean to travel to Bolivia after the summer.

Spain and Bolivia are united by close economic (with a significant presence of Spanish companies in the Andean country), development cooperation (Bolivia has traditionally been a priority partner of the Spanish cooperation), cultural and human (due to the large Bolivian community residing in our country) bonds.

Both ministers also addressed regional matters, such as the holding of the Ibero-American Summit and the situation in Venezuela.

Additionally, Minister Josep Borrell met today with Rodolfo Nin Novoa, Uruguay's Minister of Foreign Affairs. This was their first meeting, and they took this opportunity to review the main issues of the bilateral agenda and to verify the excellent state of the bilateral relations. Among other matters, they have addressed the perspectives for the conclusion of the Partnership Agreement between the European Union and MERCOSUR at a time when Uruguay is the President Pro Tempore of MERCOSUR throughout the second half of 2018.

Spain and Uruguay share similar positions on issues such as the defence of multilateralism and Human Rights. Furthermore, Spain is a relevant business partner and the second largest investor in the country. Spanish companies have a keen interest in participating in the infrastructure projects which are being undertaken in Uruguay. Besides the economic sphere, the stable relations in the fields of culture, science, academia and police, among many others, make Uruguay a close partner for Spain.

This morning, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation also attended a meeting between the EU and the Pacific Alliance which revealed cooperation opportunities for both partners. During this meeting, both ministers focused on the future cooperation opportunities which may arise in areas such as the digital agenda, trade facilitation and investment promotion, academic mobility and the internationalisation of SMEs, among others.

The Pacific Alliance, established in 2011, comprises Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Chile, and is a relevant regional integration project. Spain was the first European observer State in the Pacific Alliance shorty after its establishment, and the first country, along with Canada, which signed a joint statement which underlines the will to strengthen our future relations.
