Minister Josep Borrell attends the EU-CELAC ministerial meeting and holds meetings with his counterparts in Chile and Venezuela

Today the minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Josep Borrell, will attend the second meeting of Foreign Affairs ministers from European Union countries and from the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

In the meeting they will evaluate the programmes and actions underway, with the objective of driving forward the implementation of the EU-CELAC Action Plan and of highlighting the importance of strengthening bi-regional political dialogue. The approval of a joint declaration is planned by the end of the meeting, which will centre on three core areas: the defence of multilateralism and the strengthening of our cooperation to handle global challenges; the application of Agenda 2030 for sustainable development; and joint efforts to achieve more inclusive and sustainable economies.

The CELAC brings together 33 states that represent some 600 million people. The EU and CELAC represent a total of 61 states—one third of the members of the United Nations—with nearly 1,000 million inhabitants.

Outside this meeting, Minister Josep Borrell held a meeting with his Chilean counterpart, Roberto Ampuero. This is the first meeting between dignitaries of these two countries that have excellent bilateral relations, confirmed by their status as strategic partners.
During the meeting, which was friendly, they handled different topics, like President Piñera’s upcoming visit to Spain; the negotiations for the modernisation of the Association Agreement between Chile and the EU, which Spain fully supports; the important Spanish business presence in the Andean country and trade relations; the Pacific Alliance and the deepening of Spanish ties with this organisation; the commemoration of the 500th anniversary since Magellan and Elcano circumnavigated the globe; and the development cooperation and both countries’ mutual support of possible candidatures in diverse multilateral bodies. For the Spanish part, the minister thanked President Piñera for his invitation to the Spanish prime minister to visit this South American country on a date still to be determined.

Another meeting was held today between Minister Josep Borrell and Venezuelan Minister of Foreign Affairs Jorge Arreaza. During the meeting, both ministers handled the situation in Venezuela and the bilateral relations between their countries.

Minister Borrell conveyed to Chancellor Arreaza the EU’s deep concern about the situation in his country. He also stated the Spanish government’s wish to actively contribute to producing the conditions for a democratic, peaceful and negotiated outcome to this situation and the intention to maintain, to this end, fluid talks with the government, opposition and internationally relevant players.

Minister Josep Borrell also expressed the wish of the government of Spain to maintain bilateral relations that will let multiple matters stemming from the links between both countries be attended to, without prejudice to the discrepancies existing between the governments.
