PRESS RELEASE 064
The 38th session of the Human Rights Council comes to a close
06/07/2018

Today saw the conclusion of the 38th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, at which Spain participated, as a member of the Council for the 2018-2020 period. In his office as vice-president, the permanent representative of Spain presided over several meetings at this session.

At the start of this session, the United States announced its withdrawal from the Council. Spain regrets this decision and trusts in being able to continue cooperating with the United States on human rights affairs.

In this 38th session, the Council matters included gender equality and violence against women by companies and human rights, the right to health and non-discrimination due to sexual orientation or gender identity and racism.

Spain actively participated in the annual debate on women's rights, which this year dealt with online violence against defenders of human rights. Non-discrimination due to gender and the protection human rights defenders are two priorities in our foreign policy on human rights.

Further, the Council approved several resolutions and initiatives that were co-sponsored by Spain, where a few that merit mention include those related to eliminating discrimination against women, the prevention and eradication of violence against women and girls, the space of civil society, companies and human rights, the right to education and the preventive mandate by the Human Rights Council, as well as others on the status in different countries.

The Council also devoted a good part of its sessions to the analysis and debate of some of the most serious human rights abuses existing today, such as those being experienced in Syria, Eritrea and Myanmar.

Spain also co-sponsored a parallel event on Rights to Education and Information and Communication Technologies, and the proceeding to present the report by the UN Office of the High Commissioner on the contribution of national parliaments to the Council's tasks.
