PRESS RELEASE 059
Transfer of Spanish Prisoners from Peru
15/06/2018

Spain today completes a new transfer of Spanish prisoners who are serving sentences in Peruvian prisons, which will be joined by a group of Spanish citizens who are in a serious humanitarian situation after being released from prison.

The aeroplane will transfer a group of 67 people from Lima to Madrid: 31 Spanish citizens who are currently serving sentences, 5 whose sentences have been commuted and another 31 Spanish citizens, most of them former detainees who are in a precarious situation. Passengers have been accompanied at all times by Spanish National Police officers and personnel from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation.

This flight, chartered by the Ministry of the Interior (CGEF), has received collaboration from Interpol.

It is a continuation of the two former trips which took place in March and September 2017, which transferred one hundred and fifteen Spanish citizens who were serving sentences in Peruvian prisons or had been released from prisons in Peru.

Once again, this operation has been possible thanks to the close collaboration with the Peruvian Ministry of Justice as a result of the excellent relations between the Republic of Peru and the Kingdom of Spain, and falls under the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons in force in both countries.

Additionally, the close and effective cooperation between the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of the Interior with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation has been vital for organising this new transfer.

These transfers, together with the application of prison benefits, have led to a significant decrease in the number of Spanish citizens serving sentences in Peru, which currently amounts to seventy-seven people.

As of 31 May, there are 1033 Spanish prisoners around the world, 919 of which are men and 114 are women. All of them receive permanent and regular consular assistance in the correctional facilities where they are serving sentences, and their cases are properly monitored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, which conducts contact tasks and gives assistance to their relatives, particularly through the Spanish Consular Sections.
