PRESS RELEASE 058
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation welcomes the Members of the International Commission against the Death Penalty
29/05/2018

This morning, the minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Alfonso Dastis, welcomed the nine members of the International Commission against the Death Penalty, who are holding their General Assembly in Madrid.

The Commission is an initiative from the Spanish government and was created in 2010 in Madrid; Spain is its main contributor. With this endeavour, Spain's decided commitment to the universal abolition of the death penalty is evident, considering it to be inhumane and to not have a deterrent effect on crime.

In the meeting, the members of the Commission expressed their satisfaction towards Spain's role, not just with regards founding the Commission, but also with the continued support it has provided with the aim of achieving the abolition of the death penalty. Minster Dastis conveyed his interest in the ongoing initiatives and he reiterated Spain's support of the Commission.

Likewise, Alfonso Dastis recalled that from 2018-2021 Spain is a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council. This poses a great opportunity for collaboration with the Commission in work that will help the cause for abolition. He also highlighted that fighting against the death penalty is one of the priorities of Spain's mandate of the Human Rights Council.

Alfonso Dastis also wanted to emphasise Spain's pioneering role with regards attending to victims and he stated that Spain is willing to collaborate with the Commission to transmit and demonstrate to the States that still have the death penalty that it does not serve to help the victims of the crimes in any way.

Finally, the members of the Commission presented minister Dastis with the publication "“How States abolish the Death Penalty”, which gathers accurate and historical data about the death penalty, and also benefited from the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation himself.
