PRESS RELEASE 057
Visit of the State Secretary for Foreign Affairs to Equatorial Guinea
23/05/2018

The State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ildefonso Castro, visited Equatorial Guinea on 22 and 23 May for a series of meetings.

During his stay in Malabo, State Secretary Castro received an audience with President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo and also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Simeón Oyono Esono Angué, reviewing relations between the two countries.

At the meetings held, the State Secretary expressed the profound significance of the 50th anniversary of the independence of Equatorial Guinea for Spain and the desire of the Spanish Government to accompany the Equatorial Guinean people in the celebration of this important milestone.

During the meetings, State Secretary Castro highlighted how relations between Spain and Equatorial Guinea are built on a solid web of historic and cultural relations that favour an intense and frank relationship in which Spain firmly supports the strengthening of democracy, the promotion and protection of human rights and open and inclusive dialogue between the social and political stakeholders.

Over the course of the visit, the State Secretary was also able to get a first-hand look at the cooperation work carried out by Spain in Equatorial Guinea, with visits to the Spanish Cultural Centre in Malabo and the health centre and school of the Hermanas de María Inmaculada order at the “Centro Madre Alfonsa Cavin” in Sampaca. He also visited the fire station and civil protection service in Malabo, dependent on the Ministry of the Interior.

During his visit, State Secretary Castro also held meetings with the General Secretary of Convergence for Social Democracy (CPDS), Andrés Esono, and with the President of the Unión de Centro Derecha (UCD), Avelino Mocache, with whom he discussed the political situation in Equatorial Guinea.
