PRESS RELEASE 055
Minister Alfonso Dastis participates in the G20 Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers
21/05/2018

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Alfonso Dastis took part in the G20 Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers held in Buenos Aires on 20 and 21 May.

Under an Argentine presidency, the meeting of the ministers was employed to reflect on multilateralism, global governance and the G20’s possible role in this issue. The forum became a space for debate on the main affairs that affect world order, as it brought together countries that are extremely diverse geographically and culturally, representing nearly two-thirds of humanity. This allowed for an in-depth discussion on specific matters including non-proliferation and sustainable development, putting different visions and focuses on the table with regard to the most suitable way to confront and handle global challenges.

When he took the floor, Minister Alfonso Dastis referred precisely to the need to respect the diversity of stances and interests as a basis so that multilateral institutions can be effective in the search for and achievement of spaces of agreement, avoiding the creation of organisations that only reflect the points of view of one group of countries. Initial disagreements in the negotiations that each organisation harboured could be looked at—according to Minister Dastis—as starting points to reach agreements.

The Spanish Minister of Foreign affairs and Cooperation, recognising the important work that multilateralism, particularly the United Nations, has done since World War Two, has called for multilateral organisations that can take on the need for reforms and adapt to the new challenges and requirements of the international situation today.

During his time in Buenos Aires, Minister Alfonso Dastis had a working meeting the German Minister of Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas, during which they handled matters of shared interest related to the international agenda, such as the nuclear agreement on Iran, the situation in Venezuela and the state of relations between the European Union and the United States.
