Meeting Between Minister Alfonso Dastis and his Counterpart of the People's Republic of China, Wang Yi

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Alfonso Dastis, and the State Councillor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, Wang Yi, held a meeting today at the Palace of Viana in which they have addressed the main aspects of bilateral relations and issues of common interest on the international agenda.
The visit of State Councillor Wang Yi has taken place in a positive context regarding bilateral relations, on the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Spain and China. Spain and China are preparing a great relaunch of their bilateral relations for the next months that may include the visit of the Chinese Prime Minister Xi Jinping to Spain and the renovation and adaptation to modern times of the Integral Strategic Partnership subscribed between both countries in 2005.
During his stay in our country, Minister Wang Yi has been received by His Majesty the King and by the Prime Minister of the Government.
In the meeting between the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, both agreed that Spain and China share the principles and values of the United Nations, the concern for major global issues such as sustainable development, the fight against climate change or the world trade and that they base their relations in a honest and sincere dialogue on all the affairs affecting their respective citizens.
In the meeting held between the two Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Spain and China the potential of our economic relations has been highlighted: they are growing in all aspects. Both have referred to the positive evolution of tourism, with more than 700,000 Chinese visitors to Spain in 2017, according to Chinese statistics, with growth close to 40%. Minister Wang has stated that this flow can be significantly increased given that more than 130 million Chinese tourists travel abroad every year. On the other hand, Minister Dastis has reported the growing interest of our citizens to visit China and has stood up for the development of air connections between both countries, which have been significantly strengthened in recent years.

Minister Dastis has positively assessed the improvement of Spanish exports to China in the last year, which have grown by 28%. He has stated that there is still a large trade deficit of more than 19,000 million euros that a country like Spain, dedicated to export, wants to be amended. He has positively valued the announcements made by the Chinese administration bodies, stating their intention to strengthen their consumer society and open up greater opportunities for our exports of goods and services.
Ministers Dastis and Wang Yi have also discussed the New Chinese Silk Road, which Spain has supported since the beginning as a possible source of activity for Spanish infrastructure, engineering, energy and telecommunications companies, which are among the most competitive in the world. Minister Dastis and Minister Wang Yi have agreed that the principles of transparency, free access, prominence of the private initiative and economic, financial and environmental sustainability are essential for the success of the project. Minister Dastis stated that the European Union is preparing a reflection on Eurasian connectivity whose results will be incorporated by Spain in its cooperation with China in the new silk route. Both Ministers agreed that they are commonly interested to promote joint activities of our companies in this and other frameworks and they congratulated the efforts being made by both administrations to establish a steady cooperation system in third markets between Chinese and Spanish companies.
Within the scope of the international agenda, the situation on the Korean peninsula and the prospects for a complete, irreversible and verifiable denuclearisation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea were addressed. Both ministers have agreed to consider the issue as of maximum interest for global security and stability and Minister Dastis has positively assessed the constructive role played by China and other regional and global players.

They have also addressed other issues of shared interest such as the nuclear agreement with Iran, the situation in the Middle East, the stability of international trade, the reform of the United Nations, China's relations with the European Union and the process of European construction.

Finally, the lunch offered by Minister Dastis to his Chinese counterpart has contributed to the dissemination and promotion of the Spanish gastronomic heritage, an important part of Spanish culture, thanks to the selfless collaboration of the Spanish chef Mario Sandoval, Spanish National Gastronomy Award-winner in 2013, for preparing the menu.
