Presentation of the event “Spain, 2018 - 2022 Asia Goal”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Alfonso Dastis has today closed the event “Spain, 2018-2022 Asia Goal” in which the document “Strategic Vision for Spain in Asia 2018 - 2022” has been presented, and the experiences and suggestions of various representatives of many of the main Spanish economic, academic operators and cultural and social agents with projection in the said continent have been gathered.

As highlighted by Minister Dastis, the Strategic Vision suggests a strong cooperation between the Administration and civil society, in order to delve into this path and foster our economic activity, by taking advantage of the thrust and the possibilities this continent is offering us now, at a moment when its main countries are undertaking transformations of their economic model and opening to new forms of cooperation with Spain.

The event included two panels for common analysis of success stories of educators, companies and cultural agents which have already opted for investing in Asia, and which have provided with valuable lessons learned for those who are starting to invest in Asia from Spain. In a first panel, chaired by the director of Real Instituto Elcano, Charles Powell, and focused on engineering, autoparts, energy and bank companies, the vice-president of Técnicas Reunidas, Manuel Valencia, took the floor and recommended a deep knowledge of Asian societies and the adaptation to the economic model of those countries, which is often different from the European one. The head of Communication of Gestamp, Miguel López - Quesada, the head of International Affairs of Acciona, José Eugenio Salarich, and the representative of CaixaBank, Ángel Gil Gutierrez, took the floor too in order to explain the work their companies have been performing for some time now in the main markets of that area.

In the second part, led by the Director of Casa Asia, David Navarro, success stories of education, cultural and social agents were presented, with the increase of Asian tourism in our country for the past years as background, and the development of Spain as an increasingly interesting educational destination for Asian students. In this panel, the representatives of El Corte Inglés, Javier Fernández, of the Instituto de Empresa, Antonio Montes, the president of Festival Sonar, Ventura Barba and the head of the Global Network of the Spanish League, Nicolás García-Hemme, explained their work.

The minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, in his closing remarks, thanked everyone for their commitment with this crucial dimension of Spain's overseas activities, and reminded that the “Strategic Vision for Spain in Asia 2018 - 2022” is an initiative by means of which the Government intends to give rise to a new alliance with the civil society, for the economic activity in Spain to be projected and for our culture, our science and the values of our society to be further disseminated.
