PRESS RELEASE 047
Citizens' Consultations on the Future of Europe Launched
07/05/2018

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Alfonso Dastis, has today, 7 May, participated in the launch of the "citizens' consultations" process on the future of Europe. The event was presided over by the Speaker of the Senate, Pío García Escudero, in the Old Senate Sessions Chamber.

The event also saw the participation of the State Secretary for European Affairs, Jorge Toledo, the Chairperson of the Mixed Committee for the European Union, Soraya Rodríguez Ramos, and the representatives of the European Commission and the Parliament in Madrid, Maria Andrés and Juergen Foecking, among other figures.

Ahead of the imminent rebalancing of power after Brexit and Spain being a country with a decidedly pro-European population, the citizens' consultations exercise offers an opportunity for citizens to have a relevant role when it comes to laying the solid foundations of our country's leadership role in building the Europe of the future.

Many Europeans feel cut off from the decision-making process and the policies that are adopted in Brussels but that have repercussions on their daily lives, and a significant number of them show a certain scepticism regarding the European project.

After the last European Council meeting of 2017, the 27 Member States of the European Union (with the exception of the United Kingdom) decided to launch this initiative spearheaded by French President Emmanuel Macron. And so, this "citizens' consultations" project will be the largest citizen participation process on the future of Europe carried out simultaneously across the countries of the EU.

It will be civil society, economic and social stakeholders that lead the execution of the process directly, deciding on the level of participation in these consultations and the format of the events it is proposed to organise. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation will provide support work, coordination and approval of results, which will be sent to the last European Council meeting of the year.
