PRESS RELEASE 044
The Permanent Secretary of the G5 Sahel visits Spain
25/04/2018

The Permanent Secretary of the G5 Sahel, Maman Sambo Sidikou, has made today a working visit to Spain. During his stay in Madrid, Sidikou has been received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Alfonso Dastis, with whom he has been able to talk about issues of shared interest for Spain and the Sahel region.

The G5 Sahel is a subregional organisation formed by Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad, which is aimed to coordinate and improve the effectiveness of initiatives on regional security and economic development of the Sahel.

Maman Sambo Sidikou was appointed the new Permanent Secretary of the G5 Sahel at the 4th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the group, which took place on 6 February 2018 in Niamey (Niger). He has extensive experience in the international field, with more than 25 years of service in the administration of his country, Niger, in the United Nations and in the African Union (AU).

Minister Dastis congratulated the permanent secretary on his appointment and reiterated Spain's support for the G5 Sahel, highlighting, in particular, the key place that this region occupies both in the development cooperation strategy (V Master Plan) and, in general, in the foreign policy of Spain towards Africa. He also recalled the important milestone of the High-Level Conference on the Sahel in Brussels on 23 February, in which the Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, participated and in which important commitments from the supporters of G5 Sahel Joint Force were announced.

Minister Dastis has been interested in the work programme of the Permanent Secretary and in possible collaboration means between Spain and the EU. The Minister and the Permanent Secretary have exchanged views on the situation in the Sahel and on the short and medium-term challenges in the region.

On the agenda of the visit of the Permanent Secretary of the G5 Sahel, meetings are planned with the Minister of the Interior, Juan Ignacio Zoido, as well as with the heads of the Ministry of Defence and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). During his stay in Spain, Maman Sambo Sidikou will travel to Alicante to participate in an event organised by Casa Mediterráneo.
