The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, held a meeting on Monday, 17 April, with the NGO Coordinator for Spanish development (Spanish acronym: CONGDE).
The CONGDE comprises 76 Development NGOs with a national scope and 17 regional coordinators, with a total of 400 organisations that work in more than 110 countries.
In 2015, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Spanish acronym: AECID), allocated a total of 59 million euros to support initiatives by Spanish Development NGOs, plus another 16.4 million euros to Development NGOs in partner countries. This represents more than 30% of the budget available to the AECID, excluding operating costs. In total, development NGOs channelled 196.5 million euros from public authorities as a whole in 2015, close to 30% of gross bilateral official development aid, one of the highest levels of all the countries on the Development Aid Committee (the average being 17.4%).
The aim of the meeting was to make clear the CONGDE’s intention to enter into dialogue, particularly within the framework of the process to reflect on and draw up the new Master Plan on cooperation, highlighting the role that Development NGOs play as leading partners in development cooperation policies. Furthermore, during his speech, the minister stressed some of the commitments taken on in the field of international development cooperation, such as greater efficiency in the provision of aid and the aforesaid Master Plan aligned with the 2030 Agenda.
Minister Dastis also took the opportunity to underline the appreciation and recognition of the work of co-operators, as well as to reiterate the interest in increasing Spanish Official Development Aid as soon as is feasible.
