Tribute to Ángel Sanz Briz

Ángel Sanz Briz Avenue to be inaugurated on Friday in Budapest (Hungary) in memory of Spanish diplomat who saved thousands of Jews during Holocaust.
One of the avenues in District III in Budapest will henceforth bear the name of Ángel Sanz Briz (Zaragoza, 1910; Rome, 1980), a Spanish diplomat who, posted to Hungary in 1944, contributed decisively to saving more than 5,000 Jews during the Second World War. In the same way as with other embassies and neutral institutions headed up by Raoul Wallenberg, Angelo Rotta and Carl Lutz, Ángel Sanz Briz provided Spanish documentation to Jews in danger of being subject to an old Royal Decree dating back to 1924, and offered them shelter in safe houses under the flag and coat of arms of Spain. Decades later, for his part in this heroic act, for which he had valuable aid from the employees of the Spanish mission at the time, he was recognised as “Righteous among the Nations” by Yad Vashem.

This exploit has also recognised on Friday through the unveiling of a monolith bearing an inscription to honour the memory of a man also known as the “Angel of Budapest”. The official inauguration of the avenue that takes his name will be carried out by the Mayor of Budapest, István Tarlós; the State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ignacio Ybáñez; the Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly, Gergely Gulyás; the Deputy State Secretary for Priority Public Affairs, Csaba Latorcai; the Spanish Ambassador to Hungary, José Ángel López Jorrin, and finally by one of the sons of the man to whom tribute is paid, Juan Carlos Sanz Briz. They were accompanied at this event by some 30 family members of the former head of the Spanish mission in late1944, as well as by representatives of Casa Sefarad-Israel, Spanish and Hungarian Jewish communities and Parliamentarians of the groups of friends of the two countries.

The monument bearing the name of Ángel Sanz Briz is engraved on one side with the following inscription, “In memory of the Spanish diplomat, Ángel Sanz Briz, Righteous among the Nations (1910-1980), who, in 1944, together with the employees and collaborators of the Spanish Mission in Budapest, saved the lives of more than 5,000 Hungarian Jews from the persecution of the Nazis. ‘Thou shalt not stand against the blood of thy neighbour’ (Leviticus 19: 16). Spanish Embassy 2015”. This work by the sculptor Krisztián Máthé is made of Swedish granite. of a reddish hue, with dimensions of 130cm in breadth, 110cm in depth and 210cm in height and weighing some six tonnes. It is located on the corner of Záhony Street and Ángel Sanz Briz Avenue in District III in Budapest. The errection of this monolith follows an initiative from the Spanish Embassy in Budapest, sponsored by the company Gestamp Hungaria and donated to the City Council of Budapest.

This day of remembrance will be brought to a close with a tribute concert offered by the pianist from San Sebastian, Judit Jáuregui, one of the emerging talents of Spanish classical music, in the Solti Chamber Hall of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music (1061 Budapest; Liszt Ferenc tér 8) at 7pm on 16 October, details of which can be found in the following link:
