General Elections of 7 November in Nicaragua

The Government of Spain rejects the results of the elections held yesterday in Nicaragua due to the unacceptable and arbitrary conditions in which they were held. The government calls for free, fair and transparent elections with a high turnout that guarantees the participation of all people of Nicaragua.

In the same way as other European Union countries and a large part of the international community, the Government of Spain has observed that yesterday’s elections lacked the minimum democratic guarantees required. In these circumstances, the government refuses to give any results stemming from this process credibility or legitimacy.
The Government of Spain considers these elections to be a sham and complains that they do not reflect the genuine will of the people of Nicaragua, who Daniel Ortega has deprived of the free and full exercise of their right to vote. It also complains of the absence of the opposition - since its leaders are in prison - of international observers and of the independent press, with critical journalists being persecuted and the special international media correspondents having been vetoed.

The Government of Nicaragua has established a repressive and authoritarian regime in the country backed by a regressive legislative framework with the collusion of the legislative and judicial powers, both of which are controlled by Daniel Ortega. This has translated into the systematic persecution of politicians, social and economic stakeholders and the media, and has even declared the opposition parties to be illegal, and imprisoned their main candidates and preliminary candidates, all of whom remain in prison and have been deprived of their right to due process, while their right to take part in elections, which are fraudulent for all due purposes, has been denied.

The Government of Spain also demands that the Nicaraguan authorities immediately and unconditionally release all political prisoners and demonstrators imprisoned arbitrarily and that their legal proceedings be annulled; that they restore and guarantee the fundamental rights of all Nicaraguan citizens and bring an end to the repression and persecution. In turn, it demands that the Nicaraguan State comply with the international commitments it has taken on regarding human rights and with its own constitutional law, and that it allows the return to the country of the international mechanisms on this matter.

The Government of Spain also condemns the closure of critical media outlets and the expulsion of Nicaraguan journalists, along with the refusal to allow international correspondents to enter the country, as occurred just a few days ago with a team from Radiotelevisión Española (RTVE) at the border with Costa Rica.

The Government of Spain - like the Spanish people - maintains its firm commitment to the people of Nicaragua, as evidenced by its donation of more than 1.7 million vaccines against COVID-19 through the COVAX Mechanism, and will continue to work with its partners from the European Union and international allies so that the people of Nicaragua recover their rights and liberties and can exercise them democratically.
