Spain welcomes the results of the Summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council held on 5 January in Al-Ula (Saudi Arabia). The Al-Ula Declaration, also signed up to by Egypt, is an important first step towards the normalisation of relations between the Gulf countries following the decision by Saudi Arabia to open its borders with Qatar the previous night.
The Government of Spain trusts that the re-establishment of cooperation will contribute to regional stability and benefit citizens by allowing common problems to be tackled better, such as the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Spain acknowledges the valuable mediation efforts of Kuwait which, together with the United States, has worked tirelessly since the start of the crisis back in June 2017.
