OFFICIAL STATEMENT 073
Constitutional referendum in Chile

The Government of Spain congratulates the people and Government of Chile on the constitutional referendum held yesterday, Sunday 25 October, which constitutes an exemplary display of civic spirit and democratic maturity in the difficult circumstances marked by the restrictions imposed by the elevated rate of the COVID-19 pandemic.

26/10/2020

The referendum, stemming from the Agreement for Social Peace and the New Constitution, signed by most of the political forces on 15 November 2019, represents a decisive step in the path agreed by the people of Chile to enhance the building of a model of a fairer and more inclusive country.

The Government of Spain wishes to declare to the people and Government of Chile its full support for the decision expressed, by an overwhelming majority, through the ballot box, and for the constitutional process that now commences through the calling of a Joint Composition Convention, and its trust that this will be held in a spirit of dialogue and a search for a consensus that contains the legitimate aspirations of the whole of Chilean society to build a future of stability, progress and well-being.

Since October 2019, the Government of Spain has repeatedly stated the importance of democratic values and full and unlimited respect for human rights, and also rejects any form of violence, including the recent attacks and attempted arson in churches and places of worship. Spain trusts that the Chilean political forces will find a way to responsibly address this challenge, which is unique in its history and that Chile will continue to set an example of democracy through understanding between all sectors of society, however distant their positions may be, for the greater good of the country.

With a view to the future, the Government of Spain wishes to reiterate its interest in accompanying Chile, its representative institutions, its political forces and its civil society in the constitutional process that the Chilean people have decided to initiate, highlighting Spain’s constitutional experience and the ties that unite us as allied countries and sister nations.
