Spain congratulates World Food Programme (WFP) on 2020 Nobel Peace Prize
09/10/2020
The Government of Spain congratulates the World Food Programme (WFP) on winning the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize, announced this Friday by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

The award is just recognition for the work of the WFP in the fight against hunger and in improving humanitarian conditions in areas affected by conflicts. The Government of Spain feels the prize is particularly opportune in a context of the serious increase in global food insecurity as a result of the pandemic caused by COVID-19.

The World Food Programme has been a strategic partner of Spanish Cooperation for many years and our country has been one of the organisation’s main donors in the last decade. Furthermore, the WFP and Spanish Cooperation closely collaborate through the WFP’s humanitarian response logistics base in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, from where it provides aid to the region of West Africa, and the humanitarian response deposit in Panama for the region of Latin America.

In the current context of the global pandemic, in which it is estimated that the number of people in a situation of food insecurity has doubled, Spain reaffirms the need to provide a global response to the crisis through multilateral bodies and to step up international cooperation and humanitarian action in a show of solidarity of the Spanish people with those who are most vulnerable.
