OFFICIAL STATEMENT 065
Emir of Kuwait dies

The Government of Spain deeply regrets the death of the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and expresses its deepest sympathies to his family, the Government of Kuwait and its people

30/09/2020

His Highness Emir Sheikh Sabah ruled during a fundamental era for his country, which he has headed up since 2006, formerly as the Minister for Foreign Affairs (1963-2003) and then as Prime Minister (2003-2006), which earned him the respect of all the regional leaders.

He contributed to creating the image of Kuwait as a moderate country and as a key diplomatic nation committed to the peaceful resolution of conflicts. Evidence of this was his personal commitment to the restoration of relations with Iraq after the end of the regime under Saddam Hussein which invaded Kuwait some 30 years ago and in his role as a mediator in endeavouring to overcome the ongoing crisis in the Gulf Cooperation Council. This is in addition to his generous commitment to humanitarian causes, which led the United Nations to recognise him as a global humanitarian leader in 2014.

During this period, Kuwait also enjoyed major social progress, including in relation to the recognition of women’s rights, whereby women were able to exercise, for the first time, the right to vote and to hold positions of political responsibility.

Spain and Kuwait are two friendly and allied nations that have always maintained excellent political and diplomatic relations, which next year will celebrate 60 years. At this sad time, we wish to acknowledge the key role the Emir played in contributing to the development and progress of his country.
