Spain expresses its condolences over death of Bishop Casaldáliga

The Government of Spain deeply regrets the death of Bishop Casaldáliga today in Brazil, who was Bishop of the Diocese of Sao Félix do Araguaia and, until his sad loss, was the Bishop Emeritus.

08/08/2020

Pedro Casaldáliga stood out for his tireless religious, humanitarian and social work, and his noteworthy legacy translated, among many other things, into his creation of schools and medical health centres.

Bishop Casaldáliga was an activist for the indigenous population and a staunch defender of the theology of liberation, who believed in justice and hope, and in finding options for the poor, access to land and in defending the weak and the indigenous people, as well as in protecting the Amazon region and the environment.

With abundant poetical and philosophical works, Pedro Casaldáliga was the author of the book “Descalzo sobre la tierra roja” [Barefoot on the red land]". He was the author of phrases with rich content, noteworthy among which was “la Tierra es el único camino que nos puede llevar al Cielo" [the Earth is the only way to Heaven]; “donde hay pan, allí esta Dios” [where there is bread, God is there]; "Al final del camino, me preguntarán, ¿has vivido?, ¿has amado? Y yo, sin decir nada, abriré el corazón lleno de nombres". [At the end of the way I will be asked, Have you lived? Have you loved? And I, without saying anything will open my heart full of names].

Bishop Casaldáliga, proud of his Catalan origins, received the International Catalonia Prize in 2007.

The Government of Spain wishes to pass on its condolences to the Claretian Community (that he formed part of), to the Diocese of São Félix do Araguaia, to his family and all his loved ones over this major loss.
