Spain condemns recent worsening of terrorist violence in Sahel
19/06/2020
The Government of Spain condemns the recent terrorist attack on 13 June on the Malian Armed Forces, in which at least 24 soldiers were killed in the centre of the country, close to the border with Mauritania. The Government of Spain regrets the loss of human life and expresses its deepest sympathies to the Government of the Republic of Mali, as well as to the families of the victims. It also expresses its interest in seeing responsibility for these crimes clarified as soon as possible and for those guilty to be brought to justice.

Similarly, Spain expresses its serious concern over the incessant terrorist violence over recent months in the Sahel region and close to Lake Chad, which in the last few weeks alone has taken the lives of more than 115 people on the western border between Chad and Cameroon, in the Ivory Coast, close to the border with Burkina Faso, and in northeast Nigeria.

The Government of Spain wishes to once again express its solidarity with and firm support for the authorities and people of all the countries affected, and reiterates its commitment to step up efforts to tackle, with the rest of the European Union and the international community, the main challenges facing the region through the different initiatives under way.
