OFFICIAL STATEMENT 043
Spain condemns increase in violence between communities in the Sahel

The Government of Spain regrets the increase in violence between communities in the Sahel and condemns the recent attacks on the villages of Binedama and Yangassagou (Mopti region) and Massabougou (Segou region) in Mali, in which dozens of civilians, including children, have been killed. The Government of Spain expresses its deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and its best wishes for a speedy recovery to those injured.

The Government of Spain calls for the different communities to exercise restraint, avoid reprisals and advocate peace, social cohesion and respect for human rights.

It welcomes the commitment made by the Government of Mali in its press statement issued on 7 June to investigate the facts and consequently brings those responsible to justice and mete out a punishment that fits the crime and redress the rights of the victims, while placing its confidence in full compliance with this commitment.

Spain once again reiterates its commitment to work both bilaterally and through the European Union to continue supporting Mali in tackling the challenges it faces, particularly as regards the training of its security and defence forces in a regional context that is increasingly more unstable and unsafe, having been exacerbated by the current health crisis.
