OFFICIAL STATEMENT 041
Spain and EU welcome solidarity in response from international community to Venezuelan migrant and refugee crisis, in midst of COVID-19

The Government of Spain and the European Union welcome the political and financial response from the international community to the drama of more than 4 million Venezuelans, displaced in neighbouring countries

26/05/2020

The solidarity of the countries in the region, which have been taking in these migrants and refugees for some years now, has been acknowledged and backed by the donor countries, which have committed 2,544,468,167.00 euros (2.793.062.707.00 US dollars) to complement and sustain the efforts being made by the host communities.

The Government of Spain and the European Union as organisers, together with the United Nations Agency for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Governments of Canada and Norway as co-organisers, consider the goal of this conference to have been achieved, which was to raise awareness among the international community regarding this unprecedented crisis, free up resources to help the displaced population, address the deterioration of the situation caused by COVID-19 in areas with a high density of refugees and migrants, and ensure a greater and better coordinated commitment from key parties.

The serious lack of attention given to this crisis of displaced people, which is now exacerbated by the difficulties caused by the spread of COVID-19, will be somewhat mitigated by these contributions from the international community. The EU and Spain urge countries, UN agencies, international financial institutions, and national and international civil society to maintain their interest in a situation that will continue to demand our commitment in the future.

In this regard, the organisers welcome and are grateful for the announcement made by the representative of the Canadian Government to host the organisation of the next monitoring meeting of this conference.

The parties that took part in the meeting have opened the eyes of the international community to the worst displacement crisis that Latin America and the Caribbean has suffered in its recent history. Spain and the European Union are grateful to the efforts that each donor has responsibly made and urges them to continue supporting the efforts of the recipient countries, so that refugees and migrants can establish themselves, in a concerted and peaceful fashion, in the host societies, while this situation lasts.
