The Government of Spain strongly condemns the attack carried out yesterday on Dashte Barchi hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan, as well as the attack during a funeral being held in the east of the country, in which numerous civilians were killed, including women, children and healthcare professionals.
Spain expresses its sincere condolences to the families of all those killed, to the people and authorities of Afghanistan, and to the personnel of Doctors without Borders (the organisation supporting management of the hospital), as well as its wishes for a swift and full recovery to the injured.
Spain reaffirms its solidarity with the Afghan people and trusts that those responsible for this atrocious crime will be brought to justice.
Pursuant to International Humanitarian Law and in line with Resolution 2286 of the United Nations Security Council, Spain underlines the obligation to respect and protect all healthcare professionals and humanitarian personnel solely engaged in medical missions, which includes hospitals and other healthcare establishments. Hence, Spain reiterates its conviction that the international community must maintain its efforts to achieve effective development and compliance with this Resolution, including proper care for the victims and the investigation of such attacks.
