OFFICIAL STATEMENT 035
Death penalty abolished in Chad

Spain welcomes the vote by the National Assembly of Chad on 28 April to abolish the death penalty for terrorist offences, which means the total abolition of the death penalty in the country. Furthermore, the vote was unanimously approved by Parliament. This thus confirms that the rule of law is one of the most effective channels for strengthening human rights.

Spain invites the authorities of Chad to cooperate at all multilateral forums to encourage other States to develop towards a moratorium and abolition, and offers to work together towards the same goal on the continent of Africa.

Spain reaffirms its commitment against the death penalty, shared with the European Union and with the 23 States that form the support group for the International Commission against the Death Penalty, headquartered in our country. This commitment is one of the cornerstones of Spain’s presence on the Human Rights Council in the period 2018-2020.

Following the adoption of this decision by its Parliament, Chad joins more than 100 States that have abolished the death penalty in all regions of the world. Accordingly, this is an extremely important step for progressing towards a world free of the death penalty, thus reinforcing human dignity as a universal value.
