OFFICIAL STATEMENT 177
Situation in Nicaragua

More than a year and a half after the first demonstrations in Nicaragua erupted and a deep political crisis broke out, the situation in the country continues to deteriorate. In the last few days, the repression by police and parapolice forces against family members of prisoners who demand their freedom has been intensified. Likewise, violent episodes and sieges of both the Church of San Miguel, in the city of Masaya, and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Managua have occurred

Recently, the Government of Nicaragua rejected the visit of the State Secretary for International Cooperation and for Ibero-America and the Caribbean, Mr Juan Pablo de Laiglesia, who planned to visit Managua in order to maintain contact with those authorities and with various social and political actors within the context of the current crisis. The visit was planned, at all times, with a constructive approach and with the will to contribute to the search for a solution to said crisis.

Historically, Spain has maintained good relations with Nicaragua. The Government's decision to reject, for the third time, a high-level visit hampers mutual interlocution.

For this reason, the State Secretary for International Cooperation and for Ibero-America and the Caribbean met with the Ambassador of Nicaragua, Mr Carlos Midence, to express the discomfort of the Spanish Government. In turn, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called for consultations with the Spanish Embassy in Nicaragua, to analyse the situation of the bilateral relationship with the country.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation reiterates its call for an end to repressive acts against the Nicaraguan population, for the restoration and guarantee of the rights of demonstration, expression and press in accordance with the Nicaraguan Constitution and for the recovery of political negotiation on the basis of respect for human rights and democratic principles.
