The Spanish Government Condemns the Murder of Two LGTBI Activists in Honduras

The Spanish Government condemns the recent murders of two LGTBI activists in Honduras and expresses its concern about the cases of discrimination and violence against LGBTI persons registered in recent months in the country. Spain shares the view expressed in the recent notice from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Honduras condemning the violent deaths of more than 20 activists in 2019

19/07/2019

The fight against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is indeed one of the priorities of Spanish foreign policy with regard to human rights.  In the light of the latest information on hate crimes, violent deaths, attacks and threats reported by civil society organisations from Honduras, the situation of LGTBI people in Honduras is disturbing. In addition, the last murdered were human rights defenders and one of them was also a social communicator. Promoting the legitimate activities carried out by human rights lawyers and their protection is one of the main priorities of the Spanish Government's foreign policy regarding Human Rights.

Spain reiterates the urgent need to guarantee the protection of journalists and human rights defenders. Finally, we urge the relevant authorities to investigate reports on attacks and human rights violations so that they can identify the corresponding liabilities before the national justice system.

The Spanish Government is willing to continue working with the Honduran authorities, civil society organisations and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, to keep strengthening national mechanisms for the protection of human rights in order to prevent future violations of the rights of LGTBI people, human rights defenders and journalists.
