Spain Welcomes the Affiliation of New Zealand to the International Commission Against the Death Penalty Support Group

Spain, as chair of the International Commission Against the Death Penalty Support Group, welcomes New Zealand's affiliation to this Group today, during a ceremony at the New Zealand Embassy in Madrid.

15/07/2019

The Minister of Trade, Environment and Attorney-General of the State of New Zealand, Mr David Parker, delivered a letter to the President of Honour of the International Commission against the Death Penalty, Federico Mayor Zaragoza, by which this country becomes the twenty-second member of the International Commission Against the Death Penalty Support Group.

Since the International Commission against the Death Penalty was founded in Madrid in 2010, its 22 Commissioners, all of them former Prime Ministers, Ministers, Judges and Senior Officials of international organisations, undertake negotiations, with total independence, with governments to advise them on how to end or reduce the use of the death penalty, aiming at its abolition.

The States that make up the Support Group provide the Commission with logistical and economic support.

In the last 25 years, 60 countries have abolished the death penalty. Executions have been reduced by almost half. Abolish the death penalty in the Earth, which is contrary to human dignity and ineffective in fighting crime, is a target that can be reached in the medium term.
