OFFICIAL STATEMENT 113
Spain reappointed as a member of UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission

Spain has just been reappointed as a member of the Executive Council of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) for a term of two years, by virtue of a decision adopted in the General Assembly of this organization held in Paris between 26 June and 4 July

09/07/2019

The Spanish Institute of Oceanography and, specifically, the General Subdirector of this public agency, Mr. Rafael González Quirós, shall act as the Spanish delegate in the IOC’s Executive Council, which is formed by representatives of 40 countries, chosen among the 150 countries that compose the General Assembly. Spain has been a member of this Council since 2017.

UNESCO’s IOC promotes international cooperation and research programmes coordination regarding oceans, with the goal of expanding scientific knowledge and applying such knowledge to improve management, sustainable development, protection of the marine environment and decision-making processes in the countries which are members of this Commission.

This organization develops a research project on the Canary Current in which the Spanish Institute of Oceanography takes part, and which is partly funded by the UNESCO's Spanish Funds-in-Trust of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation. The Canary Current flows southward along the Atlantic coast of northern Africa, mainly between Morocco and Senegal, and is one of the most productive fishing areas worldwide.

One of IOC’s most relevant projects in the near future will be planning the activities to be developed in the International Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) recently approved by United Nations. The goal is to improve scientific knowledge regarding oceans in order to enable the society to face future challenges, which are mainly related to climate change and to the growing effects of human activity on the marine environment. Oceans are a cornerstone of the Earth’s climate system.
