OFFICIAL STATEMENT 084
Rejection of repressive measures against Venezuela's National Assembly

The Spanish Government strongly condemns the repressive measures adopted by Nicolás Maduro's regime against the National Assembly and numerous members of the opposition in said institution

09/05/2019

Ultimately, Spain rejects the arrest of the National Assembly Vice-president, Edgar Zambrano, which was carried out yesterday by members of the Bolivarian Intelligence Service (SEBIN). This arrest follows the lifting of Zambrano's immunity last Monday, as well as that of six other opposition representatives, by the Constituent National Assembly, which is not recognised by Spain and its European partners since it has not been democratically elected.

The Spanish Government also reiterates its concern about the location of the representative Gilber Caro, who has been missing since he was arrested by SEBIN agents last 26 April, and makes the entities that hold him in custody responsible for his physical integrity and the preservation of his rights.

The Spanish Government recalls that, as stated by Spain and the European Union on several occasions, the National Assembly is the lawfully elected entity that represents the Venezuelan people. Spain demands once again that the competences that correspond to the National Assembly under the Venezuelan Constitution be respected and that the legal provisions regarding the jurisdiction of its deputies be complied with.

The Spanish Government advocates for a peaceful and democratic end of the multidimensional crisis affecting Venezuela through the holding of anticipated presidential elections in accordance with the democratic standards. Spain will strive to contribute to this aim with its international partners and, particularly, with the members of the International Contact Group and the European Union.
