OFFICIAL STATEMENT 145
Spain’s Concern in relation to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty

The Spanish government expresses its concern with the United States’ announcement of its withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, more commonly known as the “INF Treaty”. This treaty, signed between the United States and the then Soviet Union in 1987, is one of the essential pillars of the Euro-Atlantic system of weapon control and, as such, is a safeguard of peace and security in Europe.

22/10/2018

The Government wishes to echo the statement of the Atlantic Alliance summit held last July, which stated that the United States was adhering to the INF Treaty while at the same time reiterating the doubts surrounding the pattern of behaviour of the Russian Federation in this regard.

The Government likewise expresses its deep concern over the deterioration of the regime of weapons control in the Euro-Atlantic space, made up of a complete architecture of conventional instruments that for decades have provided our continent with peace and stability. It is necessary to remain committed to international law as the best method to settle disputes, regulate and ensure the stability of the behaviour of states and to condemn and sanction possible breaches.
