OFFICIAL STATEMENT 131
The Gambia Abolishes the Death Penalty

Last 28 September, The Gambia ratified the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which abolishes the death penalty. The ratification took place within the framework of the Ministerial Week of the 73th General Assembly of the United Nations in New York. The Gambia is the eighty-seventh State to ratify this

05/10/2018

The Gambia’s decision is the continuation of the signature of the Protocol, which took place a year ago, during the 72th General Assembly, and of the announcement of its President, Adama Barrow, on a moratorium in the executions disclosed last 18 February.

Spain congratulates The Gambia for this decision and invites it to cooperate in all the multilateral forums in order for abolition to be extended throughout the international community. Spain considers that human dignity, an absolute human right, is incompatible with the death penalty. Waiting on death row is torture for the condemned person and their relatives. In addition, it does not dissuade criminals nor alleviate the pain of the victims’ families.

The abolition of the death penalty is a commitment adopted by Spain during our presence in the United Nations Human Rights Council. Furthermore, Spain is the headquarters of the International Commission against the Death Penalty and chairs the group of 19 States that support this.

With The Gambia’s decision, more than 105 countries all around the world have chosen the abolition. Spain, along with its partners in the European Union and other abolitionist states, will continue to pursue the goal of making the death penalty completely disappear from Earth, as has already been seen with other inhumane practices.
