Spain regrets the President of Guatemala's decision not to renew the agreement with the UN on the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala

Spain regrets the President of Guatemala's decision not to renew the agreement with the UN on the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala

The Spanish Government deeply regrets the decision announced last Friday by the President of Guatemala, Jimmy Morales, not to request the renewal of the agreement between the UN and the Guatemalan Government, for the continuation of the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala, once its validity term ends on 3 September 2019.

02/09/2018
The CICIG has proven to be a really efficient tool for the enhancement of the security and justice system in Guatemala and has fostered the adoption of important measures to fight impunity within the country and improve its governability.

For this reason, it has been highly and internationally supported, becoming a novel mechanism of the UN for complementing the efforts of the Government of Guatemala in its fight against corruption and impunity.

Spain has supported the work of the CICIG since its inception with important financial and personnel resources, recognising its commendable contribution to the improvement of security and justice system and the reinforcement of the State of Law of the country.

Maintaining and strengthening the efficiency of the judicial system in Guatemala will be really difficult without this valuable tool. For this reason, the Spanish Government rejects the decision announced last Friday by President Morales and strongly requests its reconsideration.
