Situation in Rakhine state

The Government of Spain is following with concern the situation in Rakhine state, and reiterates its strong condemnation of the acts of violence and terrible human rights violations perpetrated against the Rohingya people, and called for the Government of Myanmar to urgently intervene to bring an end to this wave of violence, and allow unrestricted access by humanitarian workers and agencies to the region.

In recent years, Myanmar has made significant progress in its democratic transition. For that reason, the Government of Spain hopes that the commitment made by the State Councillor to upholding human rights, the rule of law and lasting peace in the country is reflected in the immediate cessation of all violence, the adoption of urgent measures to facilitate the safe return of refugees and displaced persons and the implementation of a programme of necessary actions to bring an end to the conflict in line with the recommendations made by the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State.
