OFFICIAL STATEMENT 181
Approval of 2nd National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security 2017-2023

The Council of Ministers approved the 2nd National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security on Thursday, 28 July.

28/07/2017

Coinciding with the 15th anniversary of the adoption of Resolution 1325 in 2015, and on the occasion of Spain’s presidency of the Security Council, Spain promoted the holding of an open high-level debate on women, peace and security. The debate was chaired by the President of the Government and led to the unanimous approval thereat of a new Security Council resolution on this agenda – Resolution 2242 – which was co-sponsored by 70 States.

Resolution 2242 laid renewed, solid and ambitious bases for the agenda on women, peace and security and included the commitment from States and organisations to convert the goals into specific actions and bridge the gap between the texts and the reality of women on the ground.

Spain thus announced its commitments to boosting the Agenda on Women, Peace and Security, among which it highlighted the approval of a new Action Plan to renew Spain’s commitment to this agenda and update the first plan, approved back in 2007.

The document approved by the Council of Ministers is the result of inter-ministerial dialogue and dialogue with civil society organisations that have taken part in preparing the document. The plan will remain in force for six years and provides for the presentation of the corresponding reports to Parliament every two years as a monitoring and evaluation mechanism.

The 2nd Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security is thus designed as a guide that allows the ultimate goal of the full application of Resolutions 1325 et seq. to be achieved with increasing participation from women in preventing conflicts, in their resolution and in building lasting peace.
