The Atlantic Alliance, NATO
The origin of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) lies in the signing of the Washington Treaty of 1949 by which twelve countries from both sides of the Atlantic pledged to defend each other in the event of an attack on any of them. It currently has 28 member countries, 22 partners for cooperation in the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC), seven in the Mediterranean Dialogue, four countries participating in the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICE) and eight partners around the world. Spain became the 16th member of NATO on 30 May 1982.
  • The Atlantic Alliance: structure and objectives
The Atlantic Alliance currently comprises 28 Member States and the Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg is its Secretary General. The impact of globalisation and new developments such as the spread of terrorism, especially the 9/11 terrorist attacks, have led the Organization to rethink its security objectives.
  • Spain and NATO
Since joining NATO in 1982, Spanish foreign policy actively promotes the strengthening of the transatlantic link, which is fundamental to Spanish security.
