Ibero-America
Latin America has experienced profound changes which have led to a new approach to relations between Spain and the region. Latin American economies have modernised, the middle classes have grown, integration projects and agreement have multiplied and many countries are now starting to look towards the Pacific.

Against this backdrop, Spain is designing its bilateral relations according to the individual nature of each country. The goal is to step up political dialogue mechanisms, coordinate through international bodies and explore economic opportunities for mutual benefit. Moreover, Spain plays a key role in the design of the EU’s policy towards Latin America.
  • Spain in Ibero-America
Ibero-America has always been a priority for Spain’s foreign policy. Human, historical, social, cultural, political, economic and linguistic ties have made Ibero-America a constant feature of the foreign policy of successive governments of Spain. At present, our country aspires to achieving balanced relations on an equal footing. Furthermore, Spain is a key agent in relations between Europe and the countries in this region.
  • Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB)
The Ibero-American General Secretariat (Spanish acronym: SEGIB) has now been in existence for more than a decade. At its latest summit, held in December 2014 in Veracruz, its renewal was culminated to adapt it to the new reality of the Ibero-American Community, with the area of cooperation enjoying a particular boost.
  • Regional Integration Processes
Regional integration processes in Latin America are enjoying a renewed political boost with progress being made on different fronts and at different speeds. There are many regional and sub-regional integration and dialogue organisations. The most recent integration process is the Pacific Alliance. Noteworthy regional bodies include
MERCOSUR [Southern Common Market], CAN [Andean Community of Nations], CARICOM [Caribbean Community], UNASUR [Union of South American Nations], SICA [Central American Integration System], ALBA [Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of our America], the Pacific Alliance and CELAC [Community of Latin American and Caribbean States].
  • Ibero-American Summits
The Ibero-American Summits began back in 1991 in Guadalajara (Mexico) in the spirit of bringing together in one forum nations linked through a common cultural heritage of more than five centuries. The aim was to cooperate in political, economic and social processes. During its history, the summits have borne witness to the evolution, achievements, concerns and problems of the members of this community, of its consensuses and its dimensions.
