Treaty of Utrecht

Signed on 13 July 1713, in its Article X, the Treaty transfers to the British Crown “the full and entire ownership of the city and castle of Gibraltar, together with the port, defences and fort that belong to it”. It is also included in the Treaty that Spain shall have preferential acquisition rights if at some point London decides to “give, sell or alienate” the territory of Gibraltar.

 

Resolution 2070 of the 20th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations

Approved on 16 December 1965, it invites the governments of Spain and the United Kingdom to enter into negotiations without delay about the sovereignty of Gibraltar. It was the first in a series of texts in which reiterate the need for dialogue between London and Madrid.

 

Resolution 2353 of the 22nd Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations

Approved on 19 December 1967, it establishes that any colonial situation that partially or totally destroys the national unity and territorial integrity of a country is incompatible with the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, and specifically with paragraph 6 of the Resolution 1514 (XV) of the General Assembly on decolonisation in general.

 

Resolution 2429 of the 23rd Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations

Approved on 18 December 1968, it requested the United Kingdom, as the administering Power, to put an end to the colonial situation of Gibraltar before 1 October 1969, stating that the maintenance of such situation is contrary to the purposes and principles of the Charter.

 

Lisbon Declaration

Signed on 10 April 1980 by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Spain and Great Britain, Marcelino Oreja and Lord Carrington, it set forth the commitment of the two Governments to resolve the Gibraltar problem in a spirit of friendship and in accordance with the relevant resolutions United Nations.

 

Brussels Declaration

Signed by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Spain and Great Britain, Fernando Morán and Sir Geoffrey Howe, on 27 November 1984, it set forth the foundations for a new negotiating process aimed at resolving all differences over the Rock, including sovereignty issues.
