Spain has a special relationship with Equatorial Guinea due to its deep historical links and shared language

The relationship between Spain and Equatorial Guinea is marked by a shared history and a common language. The Friendship and Cooperation Treaty of 23 October 1980 channels our cooperation with Equatorial Guinea. In 1981 the Cooperation Office with Equatorial Guinea, dependent of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was created and ever since Spain has had a long tradition of cooperation with Equatorial Guinea in sectors such as health, education and culture. The Spanish Cultural Centres in Malabo and Bata, opened in 2003 and 2001 respectively, carry out an important, recognised role spreading and promoting Spanish culture and language and supporting the training of local cultural operators.

Equatorial Guinea has experienced a significant economic development driven by the hydrocarbons sector, being the sixth largest producer of oil in Africa. With regards trade relations, in recent years our exports have experienced a growing trend.

Throughout these years of relations, it should be noted that important visits from figures from both countries have taken place. Their Majesties King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía travelled to Equatorial Guinea in 1979. There have also been notable visits by different heads of government and ministers of foreign affairs. In terms of Equatorial Guinea, President Teodoro Obiang has visited our country on several occasions. The last of which was in 2014 to attend Adolfo Suarez' funeral. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy visited Equatorial Guinea in 2014 for the African Union summit which took place in Malabo.

In 2018 it is the 50th anniversary of Equatorial Guinea's independence and their establishing of diplomatic relations. Spain maintains a frank, open dialogue with Equatorial Guinea based on four principles: respect of the sovereignty of Equatorial Guinea, support of its socio-economic development, extending the cultural cooperation and the will to accompany the country in a process of democratisation with full respect of human rights.
