He joined the Diplomatic Corps in 1991 and was posted to embassies in South Africa, Greece and Israel, where he worked as the Deputy Head, and at the Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels. He was Ambassador to Sudan, South Sudan and Eritrea, with its headquarters in Khartoum.
At the central headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he has held the following posts: Assistant Director-General for External Cultural Action; as advisor to the Chief of Staff to the Secretary-General for the EU; as Director-General for the Maghreb, Mediterranean and Near East; as Spanish representative to the International Syria Support Group, and as advisor to the Analysis and Forecasts Office.
Prior to his appointment, he was Spanish Ambassador to the Republic of Turkey and non-resident Ambassador to Georgia and Azerbaijan.
