Order of Isabel the Catholic medals
The Order of Isabel the Catholic was founded by King Fernando VII (1784-1833), on 14 March 1815, under the name of the Royal American Order of Isabel the Catholic, in memory of the great Queen whose policies and efforts led to the discovery of America, in order to reward loyalty and merit proven to the benefit of the prosperity of these territories.

Currently, the Order of Isabel the Catholic seeks to reward extraordinary civil conduct by Spaniards or foreigners to the benefit of the nation or that significantly contribute to helping foster relations of friendship and cooperation between the Nation of Spain and the rest of the international community.

His Majesty the King is the Grand Master of the Order of Isabel the Catholic. All the medals bestowed under this order are done so in his name and the corresponding titles are authorised with the seal of his signature.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs is the Grand Chancellor of the Order of Isabel the Catholic. It falls to him to ask for the approval of the Council of Ministers for draft Royal Decrees authorising the bestowal of the Collar and Grand Cross and other lower honours in the name of His Majesty the King. All of the titles and medals of this order must bear his name.

The regulatory framework is contained in Royal Decree 2395/1998, of 6 November.
