It occupies the site of the former palace of Beatriz Galindo, lady-in-waiting to Isabella I of Castile, and its construction started in the early 16th century. Throughout its history, it had different owners, such as the Countess of Castellar; Ángel María de Saavedra; and José de Saavedra y Salamanca, the second Marquis of Viana, who made important changes to the design of the palace with regard to its original structure.
Its current design dates back to the works carried out in 1920 by architect Valentín Roca, following the instructions of its then owner, Fausto de Saavedra y Collado, in which the inside was expanded and the interior garden was renovated.
In 1939, the Minister of Foreign Affairs started to rent this building as its official residence, until the State finally acquired it from the Marquis and Marchioness of Viana in 1955.
In the 1960s, the Palace underwent its penultimate reform, which modernised the building, and the latest significant renovation finished in 2008, leaving the Palacio de Viana as we know it today.
