The design of the building was entrusted to architect Luis Martínez-Feduchi, who also designed many other emblematic buildings in Madrid. It was opened on 21 October 1954. It is a unique, rationalist-style building, located on Paseo de Juan XXIII in Madrid, and surrounded by a large garden. Its initial design was inspired by the architecture of the Palacio de Santa Cruz; the previous headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Diplomatic School, created in 1942, is an educational institution dependent on the Under-Secretariat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. Its main purpose is to train candidates to be diplomats, civil servants posted abroad, and candidates for posts in international organisations, among other responsibilities.
Among others, noteworthy features of this building include the Aula Magna room, and the library specialised in International Relations.
