Documents and Formalities
Documentation and Formalities
Spaniards residing outside of the country should register with Consular Registration Program. The registration will allow them to renew official documents, verify that they are residents of a foreign country, participate in Spanish elections, and request help from the consulate if necessary.

For general information about consular services, visit this link. For information about formalities of registration, document renewal, civil register, or notary services consult directly with the General Consulate for your district.

Driving in the U.S.
Regulations regarding driver’s licenses vary by state. Spain does not have an agreement regarding the validity of driver’s licenses with any state. Check the requirements for obtaining a driver’s license in the state where you will be living. Typically, use of an international driver’s license is considered valid for a limited time, especially for use of rental vehicles.

Customs Formalities
Visit the website of U.S. Customs and Border Protection to learn about the rules and regulations on bringing pets, food, cash, etc. into the U.S.

Starting a Business
If you would like to start a business in the U.S. or Puerto Rico, the best course of action is to visit the Exterior Economic and Commercial Office’s website. They will be able to inform you of requirements and other formalities in order to advise you on how to promote your business in the U.S.

Frequent Tax Questions
In this document you can find FAQs by Spanish citizens who generate income in the U.S., including questions regarding avoiding double taxation.
