U.S. Navy Admiral James G. Foggo III Decorated with the Great Cross of Naval Merit with White Distinction
8/4/2021

On August 4, in the name of H.M. King Felipe VI, Ambassador Santiago Cabanas bestowed the Great Cross of Naval Merit with White Distinction upon Admiral James G. Foggo III of the U.S. Navy. This decoration, awarded by the Spanish Minister of Defense, recognizes the outstanding deeds, actions, and service of members of the Armed Forces, as well as those civilians and foreign military authorities who have performed meritorious actions or activities related to the Spanish Navy.

Admiral Foggo formerly served as the Commander of the United States Naval Forces in Europe and Commander of the Allied Joint Command in Naples, during which time he constantly promoted the presence and participation of Spain as one of Europe’s main maritime powers. Admiral Foggo’s work during his command in Naples was essential in the U.S. Navy’s permanent deployment of a four destroyer ship squadron to Rota Naval Base in Spain as part of Forward Deployed Naval Forces Europe, later succeeding in the squadron command being permanently deployed at Rota.

Aware of Spain and the United States’ common history, during his command Admiral Foggo also deployed a ship to Menorca for the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the last visit of the first U.S. Navy admiral, David Farragut, to the island, where his father was born.

Lastly, in a show of trust in the Spanish Navy, Admiral Foggo was instrumental in the selection of Spain as the host nation for NATO’s most important exercise in several years, Trident Juncture 2015.
