Spain and the U.S. Agree to Work Together to Bolster the Transatlantic Agenda, Key to Economic and Social Recovery Post-COVID

Spain and the United States agree to create a working group to bolster the role of SMEs in internationalization.

7/20/2021

This Tuesday, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Tourism Reyes Maroto held a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, during which they agreed to create a working group to promote the internationalization of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and their contribution to economic recovery, with special emphasis on women-led SMEs.

“This working group will focus on facilitating the internationalization of small and medium enterprises in both countries that are looking for opportunities for growth abroad, as well as providing special support to SMEs led by women to enhance the presence of women in international trade and commerce,” Maroto explained. The Minister also highlighted the importance of the platform Women and Internationalization (Mujer e Internacionalización), launched by the State Secretariat for Trade and the Institute for Women (Instituto de Mujeres).

Minister Maroto and Secretary Raimondo also discussed other issues on Spain and the United States’ bilateral agenda, with particular focus on the advances made in the dispute surrounding Spanish black olives, the search for solutions concerning wind towers, and Titles III and IV of the Helms Burton Act. They also spoke about aspects of mobility and visas that impact trade and investment, in addition to opportunities for Spanish companies in the framework of the American Jobs Plan, the ambitious program designed by the Biden Administration to reconstruct U.S. infrastructure.

During her visit to Washington, Minister Maroto also met with the U.S. Trade Representative, Ambassador Katherine Tai. On the heels of the virtual meeting the two held in June of this year, they continued their conversation on the developments in the resolution of trade disputes between the U.S. and the European Union, as well as the commitment to collaborate in the implementation of multilateral initiatives relating to the digital services tax (DST), which is being worked on in the OECD. Both Minister Maroto and Ambassador Tai positively assessed the opportunities for cooperation to come from the E.U.-U.S. Trade and Technology Council created at the June 15 E.U.-U.S. Summit, in which Spain hopes to play a significant role.
