Ambassador Morenés congratulates NPS Acting Director Mr. Michael Reynolds
U.S. National Park Service Awarded the Plaque of Honor of Spain's Order of Civil Merit
12/5/2017
The U.S. National Park Service (NPS) has been Awarded the Plaque of Honor of Spain’s Order of Civil Merit for its tireless work in conserving and promoting both nature and history over the past 101 years. Ambassador Morenés presented the Acting Director of the National Park Service, Mr. Michael Reynolds, with this prestigious honor at a ceremony held at his residence.

In his remarks, Ambassador Morenés praised the National Park Service for its pioneering efforts to preserve nature, which set an example for the rest of the world to follow. Spain was one of the first countries to follow in the footsteps of the U.S. when it designated its first national park in 1918, only two years after President Woodrow wilson Created the National Park Service. Today, U.S. national parks cover 84 million acres of land, an area almost two thirds the size of Spain.

In addition to protection and conservation, Ambassador Morenés also underscored the important pedagogical work done by the NPS to ensure that nature is valued and appreciated by all citizens. This promotion of knowledge and understanding is also carried out with regards to history and cultural heritage sites. The National Park Service has been at the forefront of promoting Hispanic heritage of the United States through its American Latino Heritage initiative.

The National Park Service is the custodian of some of the most important sites that define the shared history between Spain and the United States. These sites include missions, presidios, castles, military fortifications, and historic trails, among many others.

The National Park Service and the Embassy of Spain in the United States have been working together for several years to preserve and promote Spain’s heritage in the U.S. and the Embassy intends to further increase its cooperation in fields such as the protection of underwater cultural heritage, and to promote the upcoming anniversaries of the founding of both San Antonio and New Orleans 300 years ago.
